Global Health Advocacy Project (GhAP)

We are concerned about the lack of democracy and transparency in the election of the new director of the World Health Organisation. We campaigned about this during the 2006 WHO Director General elections.

This is the list of candidates from 2006. On the right are a series of articles about these candidates and about the problems with the election process...

  • Dr Kazem Behbehani (proposed by Kuwait)

  • Dr Margaret Chan (proposed by China)

  • Dr Julio Frenk (proposed by Mexico)

  • Mr David A. Gunnarsson (proposed by Iceland)

  • Dr Nay Htun (proposed by Myanmar)

  • Dr Karam Karam (proposed by Syrian Arab Republic) - DROPPED OUT

  • Dr Bernard Kouchner (proposed by France)

  • Dr Pascoal Manuel Mocumbi (proposed by Mozambique)

  • Dr Shigeru Omi (proposed by Japan)

  • Dr Alfredo Palacio González (proposed by Ecuador) - DROPPED OUT

  • Professor Pekka Puska (proposed by Finland)

  • Ms Elena Salgado Méndez (proposed by Spain)

Some of them had personal website or manifestos. These were quite hard to find. If you know of any more, please let us know.

The Lancet and the People's Health Movement were in contact with some of the candidates. The Lancet articles are in the box on the right. The PHM articles can be found on their website.
