Update - Letter sent to Margaret Chan, May 2007 - you can download it from the box, top right
We are concerned about the lack of democracy in process of electing the Director General of the World Health Organisation. The process is undemocratic and lacks transparency. For example, only 34 out of 193 member countries are able to vote. Deliberations take place behind closed doors and debate is not encouraged. A collection of articles detailing the problems with the current system can be found here.
We campaigned on this issue during the 2006 DG elections. We worked jointly with Medact on this campaign.
- In November 2006, we sent an open letter to the Ministries of Health in all 193 WHO member countries. A copy was sent to Dr Anders Nordström, the acting head of the WHO.
- Letters were hand delivered in 11 countries on November 8th 2006 - Click here for photos and details of these protests around the world
