Sexpression

Sexpression educates young people in sex and relationship issues and aims to empower them to make informed choices about their reproductive health. Healthcare students deliver interactive and informal sessions to small groups, creating a relaxed environment to learn about sexual health and broach sensitive topics.

Mission statement:

Sexpression is an independent student initiative, not affiliated to any religious or political cause. We believe in:

  • Creating opportunities to discuss sexual matters in an open, non-judgmental environment
  • Promoting individual self-esteem and empowerment
  • Encouraging respect for personal beliefs and values
  • Facilitating informed decision-making and autonomy regarding sex
  • Ensuring that young people have the skills to access sources of confidential advice

The organization consists of projects based in many universities around the UK, designed with their local communities in mind. They are non-profit making organizations and are run on an entirely voluntary basis.

Linked in with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and being held at the beautiful Liverpool Medical Institute, there will be a particularly fascinating theme with lots of plenaries and workshops focusing on the more tropical side of sexual health as well as providing the opportunity for all delegates to learn about new, exciting aspects of genitourinary medicine.

The Saturday night social will have a 'Birds of Paradise' theme in a swanky cocktail bar in Liverpool centre, BBQ and all can be enjoyed alongside a fantastic cocktail or two to really make you shake your feathers!

There's more information to come so keep checking this page and our website for more information about what to look forward to and how to register!

Sexball:

Sexpression celebrated our 2nd Sex Ball which was Kama Sutra themed (very appropriate!) and was hosted in February of this year by UCL Sexpression, at the exclusive ‘Vertigo’ nightclub at No.1 Leicester Square, London.

The event was sensually decorated and equipped with kama sutra books and cards, Asian sweets, a champagne reception and a sitar player for entertainment.

The site is now up and running and we have an updated bank of resources with more from NECSE to come! To gain access to these resources the branch will need to provide proof of child protection training for new members and then will be granted access for that year. Please contact the co-ordinator Eva to prove your CP training status and myself for a username and password.

Latest news from the world of SexpressionUK:

NECSE 2010

This April the National Committee attended the Northern European Cooperation of Sex Education Projects (NECSE) in Bunnik, The Netherlands. NECSE is an opportunity for like-minded student-led groups to meet up and share ideas on teaching Sex and Relationships Education.

We successfully bid to host NECSE 2012 in the UK, so watch this space!

Newcastle GHC

The new 2010 National Committee finally got together at the Newcastle GHC after a failed handover attempt due to the weather in January. The GHC gave valuable insight into the effects of global warming on global health and the committee plenty of time to get a solid agenda together and the ball roling!

A Cultural Affair - Leicester National Conference

Leicester put on a fantastic conference for us in 2009 entitled “A Cultural Affair”. The conference focussed on different cultures, and their attitudes towards sexual health, and teaching Sex and Relationships Education. The conference kicked off with an insightful lecture provided by leaders in the major world religions, detailing their religion’s view on sexuality.

Sexpression a new "endorsed" IFMSA project

With help from Sophie Relph, a Sexpression member from UCL, the Sexpression National Committee have successfully made Sexpression a recognised 'endorsed' IFMSA project at the recent IFMSA conference in Macedonia, in August.

We are excited about our IFMSA 'Twinning' with Germany SCORA (germany's equivalent to Sexpression), where we will be sharing ideas and training sessions in London!

Thank you to all our members and Medsin for their continuing support and work
