What is Medaid?
Medaid is a project that was established in Edinburgh last year with the aim of sending medical equipment to resource-limited settings in developing countries.
How?
- Collection boxes throughout hospitals
- Direct collections from general practices
- Removal of equipment from old hospitals/clinics
The equipment is then usually taken by medical students going out on their electives but also by health care staff from abroad returning home or other charity workers/visitors to developing countries.
Advertising is through the use of posters, information on electronic noticeboards for medical students and direct contact with health care staff.
Money for transportation and advertising costs is fundraised by the committee.
What do we transport?
- Stethoscopes
- Sphygmomanometers
- Tourniquets
- BNFs
- ENT/ophthalmology equipment
- Thermometers
- Gloves
- Bandages
- Pen torches
- Tuning forks
- Tendon hammers
The large project
Collection of beds, theatre lights, physiotherapy equipment, x-ray boxes etc. from an old hospital which is being sent to Malawi.
