EuWHO

Coordinators: Gemma Owens (QUB) Paul Reidy (Peninsula) & Joseph Fitchett (Imperial)

What is EuWHO?

The European World Health Organisation Simulation (EuWHO) will be a 3 days-long simulation which will provide an engaging opportunity for university students across the UK & Europe to act as representatives of WHO member states and discuss, debate and develop resolutions to pressing issues in international health.

Background

The World Health Organization Simulation concept was originally developed by members of IFMSA-Québec with the intention of promoting a culture of advocacy within the medical profession. We have been inspired by the IFMSA-Québec project (MonWHO) and would like to run our very own WHO simulation in the UK, which we have subsequently named EuWHO.

Aims of EuWHO

The aims of the simulation are to:

  • Raise student awareness about Global Health issues Provide a means for students to play a proactive role in Global Health policy
  • Acquaint students with the WHO and its role
  • Develop interprofessional relations between future healthcare professionals as well as amongst students whose fields of expertise play a role in health policy
  • Develop policy statements and contribute to the local, national and international discussions on global health policy.

Methods

Delegates to the World Health Organization will be meeting to address a key global health issue such as access to essential medicines, the migration of health workers or privatisation of health care.

Participants will represent the views of the member countries of the World Health Organization, as well as non-governmental organizations. Delegates will spend the weekend working towards a sustainable plan that will ensure a solution to the global health problem. Each delegate should keep in mind the global health policy of the country or organization they are representing.

Delegates will have the opportunity to debate in full plenary sessions, as well as initially working in smaller "regional blocks" — committees composed of countries divided by world region. The final session of the conference will be in a plenary format to allow all delegates to meet and work together.

Expected Outcomes

Delegates at the conference will write a Declaration of Principles outlining the view of the simulated WHO on the issue. This declaration will be sent to the actual World Health Organization.

Delegates will more fully appreciate the role of global health policy, and the structure and role of the WHO.

News

EuWHO a Medsin affiliated project in association with the Royal Society of Medicine is proud to announce that our inaugural simulation will be held this coming December 3rd-5th at the RSM in London. The overall theme of the conference will focus on the human right to health and students will address the policy issues surrounding making this right a worldwide reality.

This is an event not to be missed! Further information will be released mid July and we expect registration to open by September.

For now, however, add December 3rd to 5th to your diaries and keep an eye on the Medsin newsletter & the Medsin/RSM websites for further information.
