Human Rights Training with Global Health Education Project, Glasgow

The Global Health Education Project in Glasgow has arranged a two day training day with the British Institute of Human Rights. The aim of the course is to give participants a sound understanding of human rights as it applies to healthcare both in the UK and internationally. After completion of the course participants should be able to run simple human rights workshops for fellow medical students and Medsin members (please see attachment for full details).

The course runs on the 1st and 2nd of November. We will be able to provide accommodation with Medsin members for anyone who requires it.

The cost of what will be a great couple of days will be £20-30 -the exact amount will be confirmed shortly

International Development Conference, Newcastle

Newcastle University are hosting their first International Development Conference (IDC)on November 1st 2008.

IDCs are currently run in Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff and Sussex. They are organised for students by students with the aim of promoting and furthering development awareness in universities.

The day will consist of talks, workshops and a debate from specialists in the development field. Including Barry Knight- co-author of "Reviving Democracy", various NGO representatives, geopolitic and economic lecturers and others.

Medsin Campaigns Team

The Medsin Campaigns team are looking for interested members to join the team and become part of a vibrant body of campaigners. Roles on the team will include research, media and technology, with tasks such as researching into policy developments relevant to campaigns, compiling press releases for conference actions and looking into starting 'new media' releases through videos and podcasts.

Experience in campaigning is not compulsory but would be useful! Contact campaigns@medsin.org if you're interested.

Calling all campaigners in the network! Medsin Campaigns Day

Medsin are running another Campaigns Day to train, inspire and take your campaigning to new heights. Taking place on Saturday the 15th of November in London, the day will consist of speakers to fire up the activist in you and trainers on a wide range of campaigning skills.

Expect to benefit from wise words from Mike Rowson and Rhona Macdonald, workshops from external professional NGOs and information about campaigns running in Medsin. The day will suit both experienced people in campaigning and those more fresh to the area.

Edinburgh Medsin Event ‘Mexico, without the Sun! HIV/AIDS Conference Hub’

Edinburgh StopAIDS Society invites you to 'Mexico, Without the Sun! HIV/AIDS Conference Hub', a mirror conference of the International AIDS Conference Mexico 2008. We give you the first opportunity in Britain for an open discussion on some of the issues raised, chaired by 4 speakers, experts in their fields.

Topics include the role of gender, prevention needs, TB and access to treatment in HIV/AIDS; guest speakers include Dr Gordon Scott (NHS Lothian), Dr Katherine Coyne (BHIVA) and Katy Athersuch (StopAIDS Campaign).

Students for a Free Tibet National Conference, Leeds

Every year SFT UK run a national networking and training conference for students and young people who want to meet and be inspired by Tibet supporters from around the country, learn the skills of effective campainining, share experience of how to run a group and listen to stories from Beijing this summer.

This year's conference is hosted by the wonderful Leeds Free Tibet Society in Leeds University over 1st/2nd November. The weeekend will cost you only £15 and that includes all workshops, breakfast and lunch and 'crashpad' accommodation - a bargin!

Royal Society of Medicine Conference: Violence, the Surgeon and the Modern World

The Royal Society of Medicine invite you to the conference Violence, the Surgeon and the Modern World. It will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine on 31st October, and will address some of the social, political and humanitarian issues of violence. Its object is to encourage surgeons to take a wider view of their role in tackling the effects of violence.

Submit an abstract to the 36th International Conference of Global Health Council

Sending an abstract to the GHC (global health council) is a very big opportunity to you and all IFMSA to show the big work that we are doing and how students are working on global health issues. It is also a big chance to assist to the GHC conference that will take place during the 26th to 30th of May 2009 in Washington DC . You can send abstracts in three different formats: research, program or policy.

"Clinical Trials on Trial"

Health and development NGOs, government officials, academics and selected others interested in the issue of Clinical Trials are invited to attend the HAI Europe one-day seminar on Friday, 21 November 2008 at the Berlin Mitte Town Hall (BVV Berlin-Mitte Neues Stadthaus), Germany.

The preliminary programme and registration form can be obtained from the addres below.

As you will see from the registration form, seminar participants will be asked to pay a 60 Euro participation fee to the HAI Europe office by the registration deadline of 10 November 2008. (Note: Those registering after this date will be charged Euro 100 at the door on the day of the seminar.) A reduced registration fee of Euro 30 is available for public health interest NGOs and students.

The seminar fee will cover refreshments and lunch during the day, and a background reader. Seminar proceedings will be put up on the HAI website (www.haiweb.org) as soon as possible after the seminar.

Information and registration is also available through the HAI website, (www.haiweb.org). Due to the importance of the event it is strongly recommend that you register as soon as possible Friday 31st October 10am- 3pm

Closing the Gap in a Generation Conference: Health Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health

Live Webcast from London 6 – 7 November, 2008

Hosted by the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt. Hon. Alan Johnson MP, the International Conference on the work of the WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health will be webcast live from London.

Over 300 delegates from around the world, including ministers, leading policy makers, representatives of international organisations, business and civil society will gather in London to explore the recommendations made in the Commission's report.

Masters of Sciences in Global Health Sciences degree

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is now accepting applications for the 2009 class for the Masters of Sciences in Global Health Sciences degree

UCSF Global Health Sciences is now accepting applications for the 2009 entering class for the Masters of Science degree (MS) in Global Health Sciences. The program will provide students in the health sciences and allied fields with the knowledge and skills necessary for leadership roles in global health through a multi-disciplinary curriculum and an applied global health fieldwork experience. We envision graduates to be uniquely prepared for careers in international health policy, health care services, education, research, or development.
