Global Health Advocacy Project Breaking Campaign Success

www.wherestheconsultation.org

The Global Health Advocacy Project has recently made national press coverage, with the release of 'Where's the Consultation' report being covered by the Observer and BMJ.

The report summarises submissions to a Department of Health Consultation regarding proposals to remove primary healthcare entitlement from vulnerable groups including failed asylum seekers. These submissions, obtained by Medsin members, are only now entering the public domain, four years after the consultation closed. The report also details ongoing attempts to access the remaining submissions using the Freedom of Information Act.

Healthy Planet e-vote

Congratulations to all those who voted for the Healthy Planet e-vote. A quorum was reached, subsequently Medsin has signed two letters. The first of which is addressed to Professor Sir John Tooke, Chair of The Medical Schools Council's Executive Committee, and the second which is addressed to Mr David Nicholson, the NHS Chief Executive.

The first letter is to ask for more climate change and health education in medical school curricula and for UK medical schools to create a plan for sustainable development, to reduce the carbon footprint of medical school activities.

The second letter is to congratulate the publication of the Draft NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy, and to suggest that the final strategy should support greater climate change and health education for all health workers in the NHS.

Do you want to write for the Lancet? Medsin Magazine submission date extended until 14th August

At the Medsin National Conference 2008 in October, Medsin and the Lancet Student will be launching a global health magazine. This magazine will be published twice a year and distributed to Medsin members at our two conferences. Furthermore, the theme of each magazine will coincide with the theme of the conference.

We are now soliciting articles for the first edition which will be entitled 'Medsin and the Lancet Student present Power and Politics in Global Health' and we would love YOU to contribute.

The publication of this magazine will coincide with the most politically charged months seen in years. With elections in the US, Russia, the Olympic Games in China, the shifting political landscape of Latin America; the flux of emerging and established powers are likely to have huge implications for global health. It is a very interesting theme and it is important to discuss these issues among medical students and health care professionals.

As well as being released in print, this will also be available online on the Medsin and the Lancet Student websites.

Your articles should be no longer than 1000 words.

Please send your submissions to: student@lancet.com or rhona.macdonald@lancet.com.

For further details, visit the medsin website or the lancet student website

Mobilizing and Engaging Communities for Global Health Conference 2008, George Washington University, Sunday, August 24th 2008

This conference will give student leaders the knowledge and the tools to be effective campaign organizers and advocates on global health issues. Attendees will receive background on how the U.S. works with the international community to protect children's health and to reduce the death toll of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. We will also address the link between reproductive rights and maternal and child health, as well the global issues surrounding access to clean water. We will then focus on providing attendees with tactics they can use to take action on these issues in order to make change locally and globally. The result will be informed, inspired young people that can work to mobilize and lead their communities to ensure global health issues are given greater attention in the national and international debate.
