Action of the Week
Please sign the petition below regarding removal of Foundation Accomodation...and let people in your medical schools know please!
The Medical Act was amended with effect from 1 August 2007, and employers are no longer required by statute to employ F1 doctors on a residential basis.
While employers are expected to continue this provision for the duration of the August 2007 intake, from August 2007 the provision of accommodation will be optional and employers may choose either to withdraw the accommodation, or to provide it on a free or rent-paying basis. Employers and trainees should be aware that while the provision of free accommodation for the 2007 intake remains exempt from tax, accommodation provided after 1 August 2008 either without charge or at a cost below prevailing market rates is likely to be treated as a taxable benefit by HM Revenue and Customs, and the individuals taxed accordingly. - 1-2pm
- ippr (Institute of Public Policy Research) offices, London
For more information, click here
At this Friday Exchange event, Ha-Joon Chang, an Economist at University of Cambridge and leading critic of globalisation, will discuss his book: Bad Samaritans: Rich Nations, Poor Policies and the threat to the Developing World. In his book, Ha-Joon argues that the world's wealthiest countries and institutions like the IMF, World Bank and WTO want to see all nations developing into modern industrial societies. In practice, though, those at the top are 'kicking away' the ladder to wealth that they themselves climbed.

Books without Borders: An appeal for books for Palestine
There is a shortage of books of all kinds in academic and research institutions in Palestine – especially up-to-date technical, science, nursing and medical-related texts; teaching English as a second/foreign language, English literature; information technology and so on.
You can help by:
- donating books – all kinds and levels welcome, but introductory textbooks are particularly needed - up-to-date and in excellent condition please;
- donating money – so that books that are specifically requested can be bought and also help towards shipping costs;
- acting as a local agent - as a focal point for donations in your college, university or department.
Books are being collected for shipment early in 2008. UCU has kindly agreed for them to be stored and sorted at the union offices in London (27 Britannia Street, WC1X 9JP). Books that are not suitable will be sold and the funds used for the project as a whole. Please contact us if you have any queries about the suitability of books, suggestions or are willing to help the project in any way. Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace (FFIPP) is a network of Palestinian, Israeli, and International academics and researchers, with an affiliated international student network, working for an end to the occupation and for a just peace.
