Medsin takes a stand on Refugee Health!

Medsin has voted with an overwhelming majority to sign a statement issued by Medecins du Monde. The statement will hopefully appear in the Guardian on Wednesday (4th July) to accompany the release of a report on MdM's Project London. Project London seeks to improve healthcare for vulnerable refugee communities in the east end of London. The statement concludes...

"Any restrictions on access to NHS healthcare based on immigration status pose public health problems, violate international law, compromise the independence of health professionals and are likely to cost more than they save. We call on the government to reject such restrictions and to take urgent action to ensure absolute and unqualified access to free NHS maternity services. As the new Prime Minister insists that the NHS will be the government's first priority, we call for a return to NHS principles to ensure that everyone living in the UK has access to medical care, free at the point of need."

Crossing Borders and the Global Health Advocacy Project will continue to campaign on these issues over the summer. To find out more about the campaign and the issues involved, visit here or contact Tom or Jienchi.

THET Links Evaluation Workshop

Join us for a Links Evaluation Workshop on Monday 23rd July 2007 to explore methods of evaluating Links in workshops and through case studies. An opportunity to explore different approaches to evaluating the work of Links, consider the best approaches for your Link and to make recommendations as to how to enhance the evaluation of Links in the future.

Further information and booking forms are on our new website, or please email Aisha.

Victory for DisarmUCL

After a vibrant student campaign, supported by UCL Medsin and a clutch of other student groups, UCL has decided to reconsider its investments in the arms industry.

At the last meeting of the UCL Council, provost Malcolm Grant announced a review of the universities less ethical investments, which include £900,000 of shares in the arms traders Cobham, plc. For more details and cool photos of protests, visit here.

Campaigning works!
