Spring General Assembly 2007
This year's SGA has just finished, hosted by Medsin Imperial, where all who attended had a great weekend of mass debating, training, networking, elections and of course, socialising!
Here's a quick summary of what happened this weekend, there'll be more information, and minutes of the meeting, coming soon.
There were updates on the network (branches, projects, campaigns, alumni, externals) and reports from the recent international and European meetings. There were also minimeetings covering topics ranging from improving Medsin GAs to the role of our patrons. The usual Activities Board and Branch Presidents meetings also took place, with many productive outcomes, as well as some fantastic training sessions run by Medsin's 12 new trainers.
Some of the things that were decided this weekend:
- LSHTM and Sheffield are now Medsin branches
- Universities Allied to Essential Medicines (UAEM), International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Save Our NHS, Arms Trade and Global Health Systems adopted as campaigns of Medsin
- Next year's priority campaigns will be Arms Trade, Healthy Planet, Save our NHS and UAEM
The next national committee were voted in - congratulations to the following who were elected for 2007-08:
- PRESIDENT – Gemma Owens (QUB)
- VP BRANCHES – Helen Preston (Manchester)
- VP EXTERNALS – Selina Rodrigues (Newcastle)
- VP PROJECTS – Emily Finnigan (Birmingham)
- SECRETARY - Gemma Cubbin (HYMS)
- TREASURER - Rafi Rogans-Watson (BSMS)
- CAMPAIGNS DIRECTORS - Pete Baker and Jenny Jones (Manchester)
- COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR - Matt Brandwood (Newcastle)
- PUBLICITY DIRECTOR - James Chan (Leeds)
- TRAINING DIRECTOR - position vacant
Lost property - there are a number of items that were not claimed at the end of the SGA, including but not limited to a sleeping bag and a grey coat. If you think that you have lost something at the SGA then contact Joel and he will try and reunite you with your belongings.
Training New Trainers - a success!
In the three days preceding the SGA, 12 Medsin members attended the 3rd annual Medsin-UK TNT, and were trained up by 3 experienced IFMSA trainers. All the participants then delivered 4 hours of training at the SGA, which were delivered brilliantly by the new trainers, and the skills learnt can be put into use in the running of the network. Well done to all 12 of the new trainers!
There are now trainers in even more branches across the country, and they are an amazing resource for the network to access - that's you! If you would like a trainer to help your branch/activity run even better, or to improve your personal skills, then contact Joel, who will be able to put you in touch with your closest trainer.

Tobacco Campaign
Do you want to run a tobacco campaign with a big budget?
From November 2005 to May 2006, the European Youth Forum ran the project "Young People: For a Life without Tobacco?" involving 14 student organisations in 14 different countries.
It culminated in two large conferences, out of which was born the Youth Manifesto on Tobacco.
The project was funded through the European Commission and carried out with the assistance of PR-agencies in all Member States. To follow-up of the project, the European Commission has offered a larger focus and more funding for activities of youth organisations during 2007.
If you are interested in helping to organise continued work on this project, or in being part of a Contact Group facilitating, please contact Sarah
