REACHING THE END OF YOUR MEDICAL STUDIES?
In Medical School you were an active member of Medsin, partly, we guess, because you believed that members of the medical profession have a responsibility to address injustices in society.
We hope that you will continue this interest now that you are graduating. However, with the increased workload and responsibility that you will face over the next few years, finding ways to do this can sometimes be difficult. Below are details of two organisations that you can easily join that will help maintain your enthusiasm and don’t require any time commitment that you don’t feel able to give.
ALMA MATA
- http://www.almamata.net
- Email: info@almamata.net
- Facebook Group
Alma Mata is an organisation of over 1000 doctors and medical students interested in global health. Through our website, monthly newsletter and regular events, Alma Mata helps its members keep up to date with global health issues and in touch with like-minded individuals.
Membership is entirely free and open to all – sign up on the website
We offer:
- Advice about careers and post-graduate global health opportunities
- Conferences and regular updates on global health events
- A platform for global health research and in-house journal
- Discounts on books and our events
- Updates on recent developments in global health and articles by members
For those who want to get more involved, our working group acts as a steering group for the organisation, as well as campaigning on a national level to improve global health training in the UK.
MEDACT
- http://www.medact.org
- Email: info@medact.org
- Tel: 0207 324 4739
A vibrant organisation of health professionals whose activities include research, policy and campaigning on health policy and health issues related to:
- refugees and undocumented migrants
- the consequences of conflict, including the longer term implications for public health
- nuclear weapons and nuclear power
- the use of conventional weapons such as white phosphorus
- globalisation
- the economic and social determinants of health
- climate change
Medact speaks out for countless people across the globe whose health, well being and access to proper health care are severely compromised by the effects of war, poverty and environmental change. As health professionals, we call on those in power to take positive action on preventing violent conflict, improving health and on raising the standards of health care worldwide
In Medact you will find other like minded and committed health professionals who care about and take action on these vital issues. You may not have time to be actively involved – your support is just as valuable and our newsletter, e-bulletin, website and events make it easy for you to keep in touch with what is going on.
