Stop Clarion

Medical students descended upon The Baby Show, organised by Clarion Events (http://www.clarionevents.com/) in Manchester on Friday 14th November, to protest against the involvement of Clarion Events with the UK military arms and defense industry.

Clarion Events recently acquired the Defense Systems and Equipment International (DSEi), a major UK arms fair, which is also supported by taxpayers money. Last year the DSEi arms fair received delegations from 50 countries, many with records of widespread human rights violations. These include Saudi Arabia, China and Colombia. We will continue to pressure Clarion Events to not hold the worlds largest weapons fair in London next year, and will promote the boycott of its other events.

Jonny Currie, Medsin Campaigns Director, was one of those to take part in the die-in: "The arms trade is all that is bad about our country's foreign policy. On the one hand we champion international development and the health of the world's poorest countries, meanwhile selling weapons to countries with dubious human rights records. Arms are often promoted to countries with significant development needs, diverting funds away from vital public services such as health care. Clarion must see the the lack of coherence in their invesment portfolio and divest in this unjust business".
