Action of the Week - World Aids Day
Written by Gemma Cubbin, over 2 years ago | Permalink | Campaign: Student Stop AIDS
Hey people, Because it's World AIDS Day on Saturday, and so many of you are involved in campaigning this week, we've got a multiple action of the week this week.
E-ACTION
Go here and click on "email Gordon Brown and Douglas Alexander". The government is in the process of formulating its new 3 year plan for AIDS, and we must ensure that they commit to ambitious funding, increasing access to generic medicines, address health worker shortage and provide long-term investment in health systems. We are aiming for over 2000 responses, so pass this on!
PARLIAMENT SQUARE EVENT: Come and lobby your MP, we need you!
- Date: Thursday 29th November 2007
- Time: 10.00 – 15.00 (10am speeches)
- Place: Parliament Square
Events: Campaigners will be lobbying over 50 MPs (more confirming every day) throughout the day in front of a giant, elevated AIDS awareness ribbon made with over 6000 flowers. The event will be opened at 10am with speeches by Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development, Siphiwe Hlophe, founder of Swaziland Positive Living, and Daleep Mukarji, Director of Christian Aid (on behalf of the Stop AIDS Campaign). Parliament Square will be transformed by the 10m x 6m AIDS awareness ribbon, and there will also be information stalls and a photography exhibition.
If you can let me know if/when you are coming, we can try and make sure your MP will be there when you are around. Just call 07828 142933 (Rafi).
It's a Facebook event too!
Early Day Motion (EDM) No.183: Get you MP to sign it!
EDM No.183: Universal Access to HIV Services
Submitted by Neil Gerrard MP for the House of Commons to sign.
"That this House welcomes the global commitment to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services by 2010; further welcomes the Prime Minister's speech to the UN General Assembly calling on all nations to keep their promises on tackling poverty and disease; notes the current formulation of a new three-year Government strategy to tackle HIV and AIDS in the developing world; believes that the UK Government should use this strategy to outline how it will keep its part of the promise to achieve universal access by 2010; including effectively providing its fair share of funding needed to keep the universal access commitment, proportionate to the UK's wealth, while also outlining concrete plans to promote affordable generic medicines and strengthen developing country health systems."
Action Cards
Thanks to YOU, Douglas Alexander has already had over 2500 land on his desk!!!! Keep it up!
Get as many signed as possible.
Send one half off to Parliament (If you can, send them bit by bit, as they are much more effective if there is a constant stream through Parliament).
Keep the other half and give these back to me or Katy Athersuch at some point – we need to keep track of the numbers, and there will undoubtaedly be a big stunt later in the year which will make use of them).
Enjoy all your World AIDS Day (or week) events!
Have loads of fun, and invite your MP to everything you are doing. If you want a lobby sheet, and some tips on meeting your MP, email me.
