Medsin Name Change

For a number of years now there have been discussions in the Medsin Network regarding Medsin's name and whether it should be changed.

This debate has continued this year and at the Branch Presidents' meeting in November, the Medsin National Committee were asked to brainstorm all potential 'pros & cons' to the Medsin name change. These are listed below but we would love to hear any other suggestions. Email the committee.

Pros

  • help with recruitment of non-medics
  • could chose a name that describes who we are and what we do
  • it would be a good opportunity to bring any changes to the way the network works i.e. a relaunch
  • prevent further confusion with our old name 'Medical Students International Network' (MedSIN)
  • could be an opportunity for a face lift, and image change

Cons

  • branches are just starting to get recognised and by changing the name, it could 'put them back to square one'
  • Medsin is now well known in the global health field and with externals
  • could create more confusion with questions over what happened to the old name, etc
  • organisational - rebranding throughout the entire network. Could potentially be very expensive
  • Network could rebrand at different times - branches, projects and campaigns could see this as an opportunity to break away from the network.

What's happened already?

  • Guidance statement has been passed to change the name (at the AGA 2006).

  • List of pros and cons as above.

What next?

YOU DECIDE!

Below are a list of suggestions from the branch presidents meeting:

How to go about changing the name

  • A broad consultation is needed where everyone who votes must agree on final name
  • Any shortlisted name must fit for the longterm, and not be out-dated in the foreseeable future

Suggested procedure for voting

  1. Arguments For & Against Name Change by Jan/Feb

  2. Questions on Name Change at GHC08

  3. Vote Yes or No to go ahead with the Name Change at SGA08

  4. All possible names to be put forward by anyone (including externals) and made public

  5. Short list decided by vote at AGA08

  6. Referendum Process by NC08?
