Be part of the UK delegation to the IFMSA August Meeting 2007

ukAM07

Where: Canterbury UK When: 4-10th August

This summer brings with it the unique opportunity to attend the biggest event Medsin has ever hosted. We're welcoming about 1000 students from around the world to the University of Kent in Canterbury for the IFMSA August Meeting (UKAM).

All Medsin members are invited to apply to be part of the 16-strong delegation attending this meeting. In Canterbury there will be the opportunity to explore issues surrounding access to essential medicines, a perfect platform from which to address health inequalities globally.

Along with addressing this theme there will be meetings of the standing committees of IFMSA so if you're interested in public health, refugees and human rights, reproductive health and AIDS, professional exchanges or medical education please do consider coming!

As well as the meeting there will be the opportunity for delegates to attend a 'Pre-GA', which is a 3 day pre meeting workshop. Past topics have included: Peer Education, Global health, Medical Ethics, Malaria and more! The Pre-GA workshops will be decided soon! With about 1000 students expected to this meeting, the Pre-GA will be the perfect opportunity for you to meet people before the confernece proper begins. Delegates who attend the pre-GA workshops tend to find the experience invaluable.

Delegates are also required to attend a pre-UKAM preparation day, which will be held in late June/early July.

The registration fee for the GA will be £260 The registration fee for the Pre-GA is £100.

So if you're interested in going down the road to Canterbury, learning about global health, meeting people from other cultures and developing skills please fill in the application form (attached to the page) and email it to the committee by midnight on 7th May.

There are always many more applications than places. For that reason you should spend time on your application form - you need to sell yourself. Feel free to change the sizes of the boxes in the word document, but bear in mind that the National Committee have to read lots of forms, so it's not advisable to waffle.

If you have any questions please email Abi and have a look at the work of IFMSA and more information on the conference

Information on IFMSA applications procedure

Some members have raised questions about the way delegates to IFMSA meeting are chosen.

In order to make the selection process more transparent we are making available to you what we will be looking for in applications along with a newly designed quota of people attending the meeting.

Make up of the delegation for an August Meeting • Leader of delegation (Medsin President)

• President Elect

• 3 National Exchange Officers

• BMA Rep

• Person with knowledge of and experience in projects (VPP if available)

• Person with knowledge of and experience in campaigns (Campaigns Director if available)

The remaining 8 places on the delegation are to be made up of:

• People relatively new to Medsin (30%)

• People with experience in Medsin but who are new to IFMSA (30%)

• People with experience in Medsin and IFMSA (30%)

Any remaining places/unfilled places will be filled by the highest scoring applicants.

The rationale for the 8 initial positions is that it is important to fulfil the role of Medsin within the IFMSA. However following this we believe it is important for people from all areas of medsin to have the opportunity to attend the conference.

What we will be looking for in applications: • People to have clear aims for whilst they are at the meeting

• People to have concrete goals for their return from the meeting

• How a person will be able to input into Medsin through attending the conference

• Prior involvement in Medsin and the IFMSA

• Enthusiasm

• Ability to work in a team

• A well written application.
