Birmingham University launches its new B.Med.Sci in International Health
Following the great success of the Special Study Module in Global Health over the last 5 years, Birmingham University launched an intercalated B.Med.Sci in International Health in October 2007. It builds on the content of the SSM that had much input from Medsin members over the years.
The course is open to medical/dental students after their second, third or fourth years and offers the opportunity to undertake research on international health as well as learning more about the topic.
There will be three dedicated modules in the first semester covering:
- Healthcare organisation & finance;
- Communicable diseases;
- Non-communicable diseases.
Each week is themed so that topics such as climate, water & sanitation, globalisation, children’s health etc will be explored within each module. There will also be a module on research methods shared with other B.Med.Sci students.
Semester 2 will be dedicated to a research project, in an area of international health, which can be conducted in the UK or overseas.
