Medsin-UK Scottish Regional Conference Saturday 7th March - Edinburgh

Medsin-Edinburgh is delighted to be hosting the Scottish Regional Conference. The theme of the conference will be 'The Social Determinants of Health', following the release of Michael Marmot's WHO Report of the same name in September. The event will run from 10-5pm with accommodation available on Friday and Saturday night for those who need it. We have a fantastic speaker line-up and the afternoon will include a 'Question Time' style discussion to give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about how to tackle health inequalities locally and globally! The cost for the day will be £5, including lunch and coffee/tea/snacks.

Entry is via the fire escape stairs at the back/east of building. Head towards Nicolson Street with the new Informatics Building on the right and potterow on the left (McEwan Hall behind you) and the fire escape will be on the left before the road.We will be there to direct you!

10.00-11.30: Plenary - An Overview of the Social Determinants of Health

Professor Allyson Pollock - author of 'NHS Plc.' and director of the Centre for International Public Health Policy, Prof Pollock is a leading authority on the private finance initiative and the implications of market mechanisms and privatisation for public services. She has an international profile in public health and has made numerous interventions to the policy debate.

Dr Dorothy Logie - Dr Logie is a public health and primary care doctor, with interest in HIV / AIDS and palliative care. She has worked in Uganda (from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine) and Zambia (with Scottish Executive funding). She also lectures in international health (undergraduate and postgraduate). She is a free-lance writer for medical journals about development issues.

...including a discussion of access to medicines and neglected tropical diseases by UAEM Edinburgh (Universities Allied for Essential Medicines) amongst others.

Dr John Budd - GP in the Edinburgh Homeless Practice with a particular interest in substance misuse and hepatitis.

Dr Adam Burley - clinical psychologist with Edinburgh Homeless Practice interested in personality disorders and addiction.

15.30-16.45: Discussion Session 2 - Global Focus

Professor Sue Welburn - expert in African trypanosomes and human sleeping sickness, Prof Welburn also has experience in the social aspects of disease.

Dr Sarah Hill - Sarah Hill is a public health doctor in the Centre for International Public Health Policy. She lectures in social determinants of health and health inequalities and has worked in New Zealand, the USA and West Africa.
