The conference will coincide with the most politically charged few months seen in years. With elections in the US, Russia, the Chinese Olympics, the shifting political landscape of Latin America; the flux of emerging and established powers are likely to have huge implications for global health. Equally important is the influence of national and local power dynamics on health of people in the UK.
Questions of power extend far beyond formal politics or the use of overt force into the operation of every institution and every day life. They ask how we are influenced by the people around us, who makes controlling decisions in society, the impact of social status on health, and whether democratic governments, in fact, reflect the 'will' of the people.
The conference will look at big questions about the nature and distribution of power in a global society, examining the organization and distribution of power in professions, institutions, communities, nations and the globe and how these forces impact on health. We will conclude each plenary by locating the sources and dimensions of power in the modern world and address questions of how to empower the powerless, to create forms of shared power and how we as students can influence policy.
