Global Health Short Course

6 week series of informal lectures taught by experts in the field of Global Health, beginning on the 9th February at 7pm in the North Lecture Theatre, MBC.

Week 1 "The Way Things Are" An Introduction to Global Health: The Causes and Cures of Global Inequality

Speakers were: Mr Neil Alldred, Director of the International Development Programme at the UNESCO Centre, University of Ulster.

Dr Enida Friel, HIV&AIDS Programme Coordinator for Oxfam Ireland.

Week 2: 16th February, 7pm “Getting shot is bad for your health + No place to call home” Conflict and health + the health of displaced persons

Guest speaker was Mr Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty International, Belfast.

Week 3: 23rd February, 7pm “It’s getting hot in here + when disaster strikes” Climate change and health + Emergency humanitarian relief

Speakers: Mr Gary McFarlane, Director of the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, Northern Ireland

Week 4: 2nd March, 7pm “Access to essential medicines” Patent law and how this affects access to medicines

Speakers: Dr Fiona Marshall, Lecturer in Law, Queen's University Belfast

Dr Jenni McAughey, GP in North Belfast

Week 5: 9th March, 7pm "Mums and Bubs" Women’s and children’s health

Speakers: Dr Aoife Currie, SpR in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Dr Una Lynch, Research Manager, Changing Aging Partnership, Institute of Governance, QUB

Week 6: 16th March, 7pm “The forgotten battle” Neglected and tropical diseases

All welcome! All lectures are free of charge and refreshments will be provided by your lovely medsin hosts!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO STUDY MEDICINE TO COME ALONG!!

Certificates in global health will be given to those who attend at least 4 of the 6 events.
