National Discussion Mailing List

Medsin has a national discussion mailing list, free for anyone to join and chat about various issues surrounding Medsin, its campaigns and its projects.

To sign up, just send an email to discuss-join@medsin.org. From then on, you can email discuss@medsin.org to email everyone on the list. If you get bored, just send a blank email to discuss-leave@medsin.org, and you'll be unsubscribed.

Make sure you sign up with your real email addresses, not a forwarded one. Otherwise, it might reject your message for not being from a real address when you try and email the list.

Introduction

Medsin has been running the Discuss mailing list for a number of years, which members use to discuss and comment on the development of the organisation. This has been a fantastic tool, and has allowed us to build the network, get feedback on proposals, and develop new ideas for Medsin.

In the past, Medsin has had some very active conversations regarding global health, for example, the impact of the recent US elections on health and the world food and economic crises we are currently facing. The development of the Medsin network is often addressed including discussion on a possible name change for Medsin and ethical banking options. The discuss list is also useful for sharing articles and publications relevant to global health, advertising interesting events that people can attend, as well as discussing different topics that Medsin could campaign on.

By being a member of the list, you gain access to the collective knowledge in the Medsin network. If you ever have questions on global health issues or where to find campaigning resources, you can always be sure to get interesting and valuable answers by dropping a question into the list. You will also gain insights into what projects and campaigns people are working on and discover more about the role and progression of the Medsin network.

Managing your emails

This is by its nature a high traffic list. If you just wish to continue to receive updates on Medsin's activities, we suggest that you sign up to the Medsin e-newsletter. However, if you are interested in our activities, and in getting more involved, the list is a great way to do so, and we strongly encourage you to stay a while and learn what it can offer you.

For those of you worried about email overload, there are various tools you can use to manage the emails you receive from Medsin-Discuss:

  • Use an email client that supports threading. Threading makes it much easier to manage the conversations that take place on mailing lists, and make it easier to ignore or find the conversations that are most appropriate for you. Both Gmail and Thunderbird offer this functionality.
  • Filter your emails. Most email clients have tools to allow you to add rules to filter emails that have specific words in the subject line. You may therefore wish to add a filter to move all emails with "[Discuss]" in the subject line to a folder in your email application, so that they do not clutter your inbox.
  • Sign up to receive your medsin-discuss emails in digest form, so that you only receive a limited number per day:

  1. Go to http://lists.medsin.org/listinfo.cgi/discuss-medsin.org
  2. Enter your email/password in in the "Disucss Subscribers" section, and click "View Subscriber List"
  3. Find your email in the list and click on it
  4. You should now be at a page where you can set "Your Discuss Subscription Options" - change "Set Digest Mode" to on.
