National Conference 2004

The Medsin National Conference 2004 was hosted by Medsin Glasgow on 23rd & 24th October 2004.

Theme: 'United Kingdom: the power to improve health?'

Plenaries

Plenary 1: 'Unsustainable salvation fantasies or developing health care?' - The impact of UK aid agencies on health care in developing countries.

This plenary explored the following issues:

  • The effect of aid on health care
  • who does aid reach
  • how and where efforts should be focused

Plenary 2: 'Beyond aid. Our true impact on global health: arms, debts and cheap bananas?'

This plenary session explored how UK actions in diverse areas, such as trade, defence and employment can have an impact on health across the world.

Plenary 3: 'Inequalities that kill: the UK health gap'

This plenary described the health inequalities that persist in the UK and explored the explanations that have been put forward for these inequalities. Finally, speakers reviewed the policies that have been used in recent years in an attempt to reduce inequalities.

Plenary 4: 'Tackling health inequalities: perspectives on past failures and future solutions from current policy makers'

The final plenary explored how we should tackle health inequalities in the UK. This was followed by a panel discussion.
