Medsin National Conference 2000
The 3rd Medsin National Conference was held at the University of Edinburgh on 28th & 29th October 2000.
The theme of this conference was Globalisation: a challenge to health equality?
Plenary 1
The first plenary focused on Equal Health? and comprimised of five short talks about health care systems around the world, exploring equality and the differences between and within each system. This session aimed to initiate thoughts about the basic human right to health and what a health care system's responsibilities should be.
Plenary 2
In the second plenary, speakers addressed the rights and responsibilities of doctors, when this right and violated and how individuals and organisations may intervene. A panel discussion firstly looked at victims of violations of rights and secondly discussed the successes and shortcomings of the interventions of medical relief organisations.
Plenary 3
This explored the Effects and Alternatives of Globalisation. This session was divided into two parts:
Global Forces, World Orders in which speakers talked about issues such as the debt crisis, demographic entrapment, the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the WHO. They outlined the positive and negative aspects of globalisation.
Action and Awareness which aimed to empower people to take action on the different issues addressed during this conference.
