SEXPRESSION:
- BLsexpression organised teacher training for sexpression members and contacted Leyton college who to teach SRE on Wednesdays. The teacher training was accredited and comprised of a total 30 hours of training. There's been a long dry patch for sexpression. Hopefully we will be up and running by September 2009.
SKIP BL:
- SKIP BL had many successful fundraising events and has now grown into a project large enough that this year (2009) they became a society in their own right at Barts.
MARROW:
- We held two successful clinics this year, where 40 students of wide ethnic diversities (which are underrepresented in the bone marrow register)signed up. Awareness and understanding is eally growing amongst our students about - Marrow, blood and marrow donation, and its importance.
Friends of MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES:
- We are excited to have set this up, and had it met with huge enthusiasm. Our inaugural lecture, by Rose Ansorge was an introduction to MSF and a description of the critical situation in refugee camps of Eastern Chad. Our lecture hall was bursting at the seams and people had to find room to sit on the floor! In Summer term (2009) we shall be screening the film "Invisibles" by Javier Bardem.
Scope-IFMSA
- This exchange scheme was set up at Barts in 2007. We welcomed the successful exchange 9 foreign friends to Barts this August. They are from Brazil (2), Peru, Thailand, Jamaica, Canada (2), Mexico (2).
KENYAN ORPHAN PROJECT:
- The KOP group at Barts became very successful and after winning the award for best society in 2008, decided to become their own society officially.
UNICEF:
- This project was newly set up in 2008 and has had a great start with their first activities taking place this year. Fundraising was successful and very fun; "The Snow Debacle" during which £175 was raised selling Millie's Cookies in the snow; £300 raised through union night "Celebrity Couples"; and we welcomed Ms Connie Wessels to present a lecture about Unicef to a large audience.
British Sign Language CLASSES:
- A slight diversion from traditional medsin activities. This was started in Autumn 2007 and interest in this has continued since then. Two BSL classes ran on Thursday evenings, focusing on basic communication and useful medical words. Each one hour long, with approximately 16 students. This grew to FOUR classes a week! Our external teacher is very experienced - and we've had enthusiastic and positibe feedback from the students. We will now be trialling one-day intensive workshops to cater for the many students who could not commit to a whole course for timetabling reasons.
Saving Londoner's Lives:
- This project was set up at Barts a few years ago but unfortunatelt died out. We know have a group of students keen to revive SLL at Barts and our first meeting will be in April 2009.
